Alan Borthwick is a well known performer and Director in Edinburgh and has sung leading tenor roles from Poulenc to Puccini as guest artiste for companies throughout Scotland. He is the only singer ever to have performed all the tenor roles in Sullivan operas - including those written without Gilbert - and he has recorded many of these roles for leading record companies.
Alan is now in great demand as a professional director and has a particular passion for the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. He is currently the resident director for The Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society and his recent production of 'Ruddigore' in the King's Theatre earned 5-star reviews. Alan is also passionate about bringing lesser-known theatrical gems to public attention and for this purpose he formed his own performing group, aptly named 'Alan Borthwick and Friends'. Over the years he has formed a loyal audience base and has brought a huge variety of neglected masterpieces to the stage of the Church Hill Theatre to critical acclaim. In recent years, the group has been invited to perform at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Harrogate taking some of the lesser-known works of Gilbert and Sullivan to an international audience. Performances and concerts also raise money for charity and a particular favourite in recent years has been 'Chest, Heart and Stroke'. |
